A horror head-on collision between a station wagon and a fuel tanker has ended the life of a Queensland woman.

Just after 5.30pm on Wednesday, a station wagon travelling west along the Dawson Highway in Wooderson, near Rockhampton, veered onto the opposite side of the road and hit a B-double fuel tanker.

The driver of the wagon, a 70-year-old Wooderson woman, died from her injuries at the scene.

Her dog was found by emergency responders arriving at the scene.

It was miraculously uninjured and was taken to a nearby vet for testing.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The crash closed the highway in both directions but it has since reopened.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact police.
