Mick Molloy hilariously confused for Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli by Sydney businessman

There was a case of mistaken identity over the weekend when a Sydney businessman ran into radio host Michael “Wippa” Wipfli only to think he was rubbing shoulders with fellow radio personality, Mick Molloy.

The Triple M host was alerted to the fact when his Mick & MG in the Morning co-host, Mark Geyer, told him he received a screenshot on LinkedIn of a photo featuring the confused businessman and who he thought was Molloy posing at the Lego store opening in Sydney.

“I was sent something yesterday from Paul Nicolau,” Geyer said on-air this morning. “He’s an Executive Director of Business from Sydney and his caption with the photo: ‘Great opportunity to meet Michael Molloy an Australian comedian, writer, producer, actor and television and radio presenter who has been active in radio and television, stand-up and film at the opening.”

When Molloy said he doesn’t remember the encounter, Geyer laughed and explained it’s because he wasn’t there – it was Wippa who was clearly in the photo.

As it turns out, this incident wasn’t the first time Molloy had been mistaken for the Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie host.

“This isn’t the first time, and Wippa will tell you this too, that we have been confused on occasion,” Molloy told Geyer. “I reckon it was probably a few years ago where we were really looking very similar.”

Molloy said fans get even more confused when he hangs out with Wippa’s co-host, Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald.

“It got really bad when I was out with Fitzy because Fitzy’s a mate of mine. So when I go out with Fitzy, people will go, ‘Fitzy! Wippa!’” Molloy shared.

He then said that sometimes when he gets over the mix-up, he would prank his fans.

“When I got really sick of it, people would go, ‘Wippa, what are you gonna do? Are you doing anything tonight?’” he recalled.

“I go, ‘Yep, I’m going to beat up a homeless man and then set fire to an orphanage’ and people would go, ‘Gee, Wippa’s in a bad mood. Wippa’s a crap bloke.”
