Wild footage has captured the moment a man allegedly threatened two people with a hammer before attempting to steal a car in broad daylight in Melbourne.

The footage, obtained by 9News, shows a man allegedly swinging a hammer at two male drivers standing beside two Jeeps on Victoria Street, Richmond, just after midday on Monday.

The man, dressed in a white singlet and jeans, eventually managed to make his way inside one of the Jeeps.

However, he appears to exit the car a short time afterwards. It’s believed he was unable to start the vehicle.

According to the outlet, the man then casually walked away from the vehicle before allegedly returning to smash the car windows.

He was later seen walking away through the backstreets of Richmond before police caught up with him 20 minutes later.

Police said they have charged a 26-year-old Richmond man with attempted aggravated carjacking, assault and criminal damage.

Police allege the man attempted to enter vehicles on Victoria Street before he “allegedly grabbed a male driver from his vehicle and attacked him”.

A male driver sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

“The offender was arrested a short time later on Little Butler Street without incident,” Victoria Police said in a statement to news.com.au.

The man has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in June.
