A man has been shot by police after allegedly fatally stabbing another man at a property in central Queensland.

Officers were called to a home on Running Creek Rd in Kilkivan, near Gympie, on Friday afternoon after reports of a “disturbance” and located a man with fatal stab wounds.

The 52-year-old Kilkivan man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man, aged 42, was shot after allegedly threatening officers with a knife, a Queensland Police spokesman said.

Acting Superintendent Paul Algie told media on Friday the man “went to the ground” after an officer fired a single shot.

“This is the worst situation that any police officer can be confronted with in their career,” he said.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the alleged homicide and subsequent shooting was being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

“A crime scene has been declared at the address and police investigations are continuing,” the spokesman said.

Police investigations are also continuing.

The 42-year-old was rushed to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

District Officer Acting Superintendent Paul Algie and Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian will address the media later on Saturday.
