A couple has been rushed to hospital after a barbecue exploded at a Bunnings sausage sizzle.

The incident unfolded at an Bunnings Warehouse at the Adelaide Airport precinc at 12.30pm on Saturday.

According to 9News the barbecue caught alight after a woman, who was volunteering at the site, fainted, knocking over the gas bottle causing it to catch alight.

The woman was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious burns to her face.

Her husband, who was injured while pulling his wife to safety, was taken to hospital for minor burns.

“She fell on the floor, and next minute it went boom,” witness Ernie Reichstein told 9News.

Images from the scene show large plumes of smoke surrounding the barbecue.

A nearby car was also damaged during the ordeal.

In a statement, Bunnings said staff members and a customer had used nearby extinguishers to contain the fire.

Police will continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
