Anna Paquin has made her red carpet return with the use of a cane after retreating from the spotlight amid a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness.

The 41-year-old was accompanied by her husband and former True Blood co-star, Stephen Moyer, as she arrived at the screening of their new film, A Bit Of Light, in New York City.

It was her first red carpet appearance in nearly 18 months.

Speaking to People magazine at the event, Paquin spoke briefly of the mystery condition which has left her mobility issues and speech difficulties, describing it as a “difficult” period.

“It hasn’t been easy,” the Canadian-New Zealand actress explained, with the publication quoting a source who later clarified that she will hopefully make a full recovery.

It appears to be the first time the star has addressed her health issues publicly.

Paquin began her career as a child, becoming the second-youngest person to win an Academy Award at the age of 11 for her role supporting role in The Piano.

She later went on to star in hit vampire TV series True Blood alongside Moyer, whom she married in 2010.

The couple are parents to 11-year-old twins, Charlie and Poppy, while Moyer also has two children from previous relationships.
